Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form students have attended a range of university trips and visits in the last term, and taken part in a higher education preparation day, proving that university study is still the number one aspiration of many talented young people.
Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form has an long-standing tradition of excellence and a reputation for helping its students gain places at some of the best universities in the country, including Oxford and Cambridge and the Russell Group universities. Those aspiring for a place on the some of the most competitive degree programmes, including Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Law and Teaching are assisted with their university preparation on the College’s unique Pre-Professional Programmes.
As part of its continued commitment to raise the aspirations of its students, Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form’s Student Services department regularly holds workshops and one-to-one sessions with students to help them to plan their next step after College.
In the last term, the College also held a Higher Education Preparation Day, with guest speakers attending from The University of Manchester, Lancaster University, Edge Hill University, University of Huddersfield, Manchester Metropolitan University and UCLAN. Students were able to attend sessions about choosing the correct university and degree programme and how to write a good application.
In addition, students have had an opportunity to visit a range of universities including Loughborough University, the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Liverpool, Aston University and Keele University. At Loughborough University and Keele, students were given an even deeper insight into studying at these universities, as staff members from the College who accompanied the students were former students of these universities themselves and so could offer a more personal perspective on life at these institutions!
Head of Student Services, Rachel Cox said, “The various university trips we have offered this year have been very popular and we’ve had fantastic feedback from our students. Trips such as these really open the students’ eyes as to what it’s like at university and give them greater motivation to do well. Last year, the College enjoyed outstanding exam results with a pass rate of 99.5%. In addition, 18 students gained 3 or more A* or A grades and 113 A* or A grades were achieved across College! This meant that well over 300 Nelson and Colne College students progressed to university in 2010, with almost 1 in 5 getting a place in a top ranking university. This year’s Vocational results have already proven that the College is preparing for another year of outstanding achievement and we look forward to A Level results day in August.”
