Esther Williams, a student from Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form, received the Sports Development Special Recognition Award at the Pendle Sports Awards!

Pendle Sports Awards 2014 was the 10th anniversary of Pendle’s celebration of everything to do with local sport! Pendle Sports Awards took place earlier this month at Nelson’s ACE Centre, as part of a collaboration between Pendle Leisure Trust and the Leader Times Newspapers.

College student Esther Williams was nominated for, and subsequently went on to win, the Sports Development Special Recognition Award, sponsored by Denwa Communications. This award is given to an individual, team or organisation who has made a strong contribution to sport and whose dedication and commitment has made an impact within sport over the years.

Clive Escreet, Sports Development Manager at Pendle Leisure Trust, said, “Esther has been a valued member of the Sports Development Team’s volunteering network for more than three years. She started out helping at the school holiday sessions, and has moved on to helping in more challenging sessions such as the disability club, where she regularly deals with young people with complex needs. She can be trusted and relied upon to work efficiently on her own or as part of a small team of coaches and volunteers.

“She never lets the Sport Development Team down, and will often ask if there are any other sessions she can get involved in and likes to go the extra mile to help out with additional activities. Esther is a good role model for the other volunteers as she likes to be fully involved, is always eager to attend courses and wants to gain extra experience and qualifications to back up her enthusiasm.”

Esther has progressed this year onto the BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3 at Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form. Last year, she took part in the College’s Sports Academy for Netball, and has continued to find the balance between her studies and her voluntary work with the Sport Development Team. Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form is proud to support achievement and personal development in all areas, whether academic or otherwise!
