Burnley FC in the Community and Nelson and Colne College have joined forces to create an innovative education programme which will provide aspiring footballers and coaches the opportunity to learn, develop and achieve.

The creation of the Burnley FC Shadow Youth Team Squad and a Burnley FC Coaching Academy will provide young males (currently in Year 11) with the opportunity to participate in either a playing or coaching strand while completing a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport Performance, Coaching and Fitness alongside their practical studies. The two year course based at Nelson and Colne College  will provide students with a natural route into higher education for courses such as foundation degrees and honours degrees in sport related disciplines. There are also opportunities to progress into employment in areas such as sports coaching, sports development, leisure management, coaching and instructing of specialist disciplines.

Students aiming to secure a place on this course will need to be current Year 11 students and will be required to gain 5 GCSEs Grade A* to C (including 3 from Maths, English, Science and PE) or a merit grade on a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport.

Neil Hart, Burnley FC in the Community said, “We are absolutely delighted to be working with Nelson and Colne College on this innovative programme and are convinced we can provide ambitious and highly motivated young people with a fantastic opportunity to continue their development as either footballers or coaches. The course will have a close link with Burnley FC and provide the most talented individuals with the opportunity to trial, train and undertake work placements within Burnley FC – we are absolutely committed to providing every student with a memorable experience and a positive outcome at the end of the two year course.”

Charlie Moss, Head of Sport at Nelson and Colne College, said : “We are really looking forward to developing a successful partnership with Burnley Football Club. The chance to form part of the club’s academy structure will provide an exciting opportunity for players and the Coach Educator programme will offer an unrivalled experience to gain FA Coaching qualifications alongside a Level 3 Sport course. We hope to uncover some of the stars of tomorrow but also provide a solid foundation with qualifications that can lead to Higher Education or obtaining employment as a qualified coach.”

Nelson and Colne College boasts a state-of-the-art 3G training pitch and in 2014 Vocational students achieved an outstanding 100% pass rate.
