Nelson and Colne College have outstripped local and national Higher Education providers in this year’s National Student Survey (NSS).
Results from this year’s survey – the largest of its kind in the world – shows Nelson and Colne College is number one for student satisfaction in Lancashire from those students asked about their experience of Higher Education.
The survey asks students their views on a range of factors, including their academic experience, teaching and assessments, and institutions’ mental wellbeing services.
The College scored above 90% for the overall categories around learning opportunities, assessment and feedback, and an incredible 96.7% for teaching.
When students were asked “how good are teaching staff at explaining things?” and “how often do teaching staff make the subject engaging?” Nelson and Colne College scored 97.8 per cent.
The 2024 National Student Survey has highlighted the “approachable and supportive” tutors, who “give lots of encouragement.”
One student said: “The tutors on the course are amazing, helpful and supportive. They really helped me to believe in myself and start to plan my future. The college also allowed me to access counselling which has been very beneficial to my mental health.”
Lisa O’Loughlin, Principal at Nelson and Colne College, commended her staff for their ongoing commitment to finding the right programme for every learner.
She said: “Our students said our teaching is the best in Lancashire according to the national survey. This demonstrates Nelson and Colne College’s commitment to being the number one provider of Higher Education in East Lancashire, and ensuring each and every student has access to the best learning opportunities.
“We are delighted to hear that our students are enjoying themselves at Nelson and Colne College, and we are continually improving the opportunities available to them.”
There was also a 13.5 per cent increase in the ‘learning opportunities’ category compared to 2023 results, and 13.9 per cent for ‘academic support’.
Other figures included:
- 96.7% rated the teaching on their course positively – the highest in the region.
- 94.2% had positive learning opportunities – the highest in the region.
- 92.9% had positive feedback on assessments and feedback – the highest in the region.
- 90.4% positively rated the learning resources – the highest in the region.
- 86.7% positively rated the student voice – the highest in the region.
