A down to earth Nelson and Colne College student has thanked the college for the world of opportunities he has enjoyed during two years of A Level study.

Star student Ishmaeel Iqbal, 18, from Nelson, is progressing onto Durham University to study Natural Sciences after achieving A*A*A in his Mathematics, Physics, and Further Mathematics A Levels at NCC.

Self-confessed space geek Ishmaeel has praised NCC for everything he has experienced, from being introduced to College alumnus and NASA scientist John Spencer, to the encouragement and support he received to gain a five-week work placement at the Nuffield Research Foundation Scheme – where the project he created was later used by undergraduates at the University of Manchester.

Ishmaeel, a former student of Ss John Fisher and Thomas More RC High School, said: “I’ve always had a very strong passion for my subjects and they work very well together. They are also very important to our everyday lives, whether that be Mathematics for problem-solving or Physics for understanding the world around us.

“I have really developed my independent learning and problem solving skills, and both the Physics and Mathematics departments offer weekly workshops to go over exam questions, homework questions or a topic you may feel weak at. The open door staffroom policy really is great, as you feel well supported and get specialised help from your teachers.

“My results will set me up well in the future for a job in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics industries.

“I would definitely recommend Nelson and Colne College to others as the teachers here reflect the passion you have for your subjects. I will look back on my time with good memories too as I am leaving here as an independent student ready for the challenges that university and my career will hold.”

In 2019, Nelson and Colne College achieved a 99% pass rate and many students progressed on to Russell Group universities to take up highly competitive degrees in Dentistry, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Computer Science, Law and Economics.

To follow in the footsteps of this year’s A Level stars, enrolment will be taking place at Nelson and Colne College on GCSE Results Day on Thursday 22 August, and on Friday 23 August.

Nelson and Colne College is the number one college in the country for 16-18 learner achievement, based on government data, and it is number one in Lancashire for A Levels, based on progress scores. It is also the number one college in Lancashire for student satisfaction, based on the government’s FE Choices survey.
