Nelson and Colne College will bring the extraordinary to the homes of prospective Year 8, 9 and 10 students with a virtual Open Event.
The College is holding the virtual Open Event on its purpose-built showcase platform. This aims to give prospective students the best opportunity possible to experience College life.
With restrictions still enforced, the College is doing its utmost to keep the community safe. The Open Event will take place online between 6pm and 8pm on Tuesday 27 April.
It is also open to Year 11 school leavers who want to reconfirm they have made the right choice in choosing the extraordinary with Nelson and Colne College. Registration can be completed on the website at www.nelson.ac.uk.
Immersive online experience
On the night, attendees can expect an immersive online experience. This will include high quality virtual tours of the College campus and facilities. There will also be a welcome from Principal Amanda Melton CBE and a LiveChat feature will be running. Visitors can gain insight from the College’s expert staff on potential College options and future career pathways linked to the subject choices students have made at secondary school.
There will be a wide range of course information to explore across the College’s broad range of study options. These include A Levels to Vocational programmes and Apprenticeships to newly-launched T Level qualifications.
Skills demonstrations and Q&A sessions with current star students and College tutors will take place. There will be interactive quizzes to take part in, student experience videos to browse, and support will be on hand to help with the College application process.
Number one college in the country
Nelson and Colne College is one of the top performing colleges in the country across a range of academic measures. For A Level progress, the College is the number one college in the country.
Its progress score of +0.42 for A Levels places the College ‘well above the national average’. This means that students attain nearly half a grade better on average across their subjects than they were predicted to achieve based on their GCSE results.
The College is also number one in Lancashire for 16-18 Advanced Apprenticeship timely achievement and is number one for student satisfaction. In its 2020 results, the College achieved 100% A Level and Advanced Vocational pass rates.
‘I really enjoyed College’
Momina Atique, 19, formerly of Pendle Vale College, achieved A*AA in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics at Nelson and Colne College. She progressed on to the University of Manchester to study Biomedical Sciences.
Momina said: “I really enjoyed College and I made great progress in my A Levels, developing a better understanding of my subject areas.
“The teachers are always willing to support you whether in your academic subjects or for guidance with future prospects. The Science department has some of the best facilities and laboratories to help you gain practical experience.”
Megan Reeder, 18, formerly of Park High School, achieved A* in her Health and Social Care qualification. She is now studying Adult Nursing at Edge Hill University.
Megan said: “College is great. I have met lots of different people and have been given the opportunity to develop myself in lessons and through extracurricular activities.
“I have an ambition to become a nurse working in neonatal intensive care. While at College, I was supported to gain a place as a Healthcare Assistant at the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. This has given me great experience of the NHS.”
Louis Hartley, 21, formerly of Colne Primet Academy, recently completed his Engineering Apprenticeship and is employed at KSJ Engineering.
Louis said: “I chose to do my Apprenticeship because I preferred the practical side of Engineering and to learn this way. I’ve grown my knowledge and experience throughout my Apprenticeship, and I was supported on a regular basis by my Trainer Assessor.
“I can operate and programme CNC machines, I can problem-solve, and I’m a better communicator. I’m also able to work independently or in a team, and have supported the learning of a work placement student.”
