Public Services students have swapped their sports gear for glamorous attire to celebrate their successes at an annual military-style MESS Dinner.
The glittering annual event included a formal five course meal in Farringtons Restaurant and Bistro, which was conducted by NCC’s outstanding Catering and Hospitality staff and students.
Retired Territorial Army Lt Col Brian Pickup MBE acted as guest speaker for the evening, while Assistant Principal Paul Britton was also in attendance.
Public Services tutor Richie Watts said: “The annual MESS Dinner is a real highlight of the Public Services’ calendar, and once again it did not disappoint.
“This is the seventh year the event has been held at NCC, and even though I didn’t think it possible, the standard of food and service throughout the night went up another notch.
“It was a real celebration of the hard work and commitment of our students, who have developed their practical skills and theoretical knowledge throughout their time at NCC, to prepare them for a successful future in the public services. We wish them all the best, and look forward to hearing how they progress as part of our alumni.”
For students, the MESS Dinner marked the end of two years of study, and training – with many now preparing to go to University or pursue exciting careers.
The event also included a cheque presentation of £450 to Rossendale First Responders – after students recently organised and took part in their own National Three Peaks Indoor Challenge.
Level 3 student Becky Coyne, 18, who aims to become a firefighter, said: “I really enjoyed the MESS Dinner – it was really professional, and all the food was well presented. The key speaker Brian was really good, and he gave us some advice that will help us when we leave college.
“I have enjoyed my three years at NCC. We have become like a little family on our course, and it is quite emotional leaving them all.
“University and career talks this year have really helped me feel ready and prepared for what I am going to do – become a firefighter.”
By doing a Public Services course at NCC, students are opening doors to highly rewarding careers within the civil service, local authorities, private organisations or consultancies. They have access to contemporary facilities, including a six-court sports hall, gymnasium with specialist equipment and a high-tech sports pitch and multi-use games area.
