Engineering staff and students a have worked together to arrange a charity football mini-tournament – raising vital funds for Help for Heroes.
Help for Heroes was founded in 2007. Since its beginnings, the charity has raised over £200 000 000, helping the men and women of the armed forces who have been wounded, injured or sick whilst serving in the army, navy, air force or marines.
The College is committed to developing well-rounded young people – not only equipping them with the academic qualifications to begin successful career journeys, but also providing experiences which bring communities together. The Engineering department decided to organise a mini football tournament between staff and students. 4 teams came forward, with one of the student teams beating the staff team to the champion title! In the process, the enterprising teams raised a total of £144!
Help for Heroes volunteer, Wendy Singleton, who is County Coordinator for Lancashire said, “At the present time we have no combat troops anywhere in the world but we have personnel deployed to combat Ebola in West Africa, we have troops training in various locations across the world in readiness, for example, for potential involvement in the war against IS in Iraq, and our Special Forces are busier than ever.
Therefore, it is crucial that the public continue their generous support for Help for Heroes as our wounded, sick and injured continue their real fight – a fight that may last for the rest of their lives. Thank you to the Engineering students at Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form – your contribution is gratefully received and will go a long way to helping someone who is very deserving.”
