Two former students are chasing their scientific career dreams after securing Scholarships from The Ogden Trust.
Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form has an unrivalled reputation for excellence in Science. As one of only a few in the country to be awarded STEM Assured status by the New Engineering Foundation; which recognises excellence in the provision of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, the College is committed to helping dedicated and talented science students reach their full potential.
The Ogden Trust is a charitable organisation which aims to promote the teaching and learning of Physics. As a university and career choice, Physics is challenging option and the Ogden Trust aims to support budding physicists through their education by providing scholarships. Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form was therefore thrilled to learn that two of its recent Physics stars had secured Science Scholarships from the Trust, allowing them to chase their dream careers!
A Level students Umair Asif and Amy Elliot are deserving of this additional support from the Ogden Trust; Umair achieved 3 A*s and 1 A and has progressed to the University of York to read Mathematics and Physics, whilst Amy achieve 2 A*s and 2 As, allowing her to take up a place to read Physics with Astrophysics at the University of Manchester. Both Umair and Amy will receive Scholarships worth £1500 per year, which will go a long way to supporting their scientific studies.
Umair Asif said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form – the staff were very supportive and helped me through every step of the way. I made some great and had the opportunity to gain some great experiences such as the Physics trips to Kielder Observatory and CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. I would encourage other Science students to take part and sign up for summer schools, internships and other events as it provides you with a great deal of skill and insight!”
Amy Elliot agreed and went on to say, “My experience at Nelson and Colne was amazing! The teachers couldn’t have been more helpful and the College was a great part of my journey towards pursuing a career in Physics.”
