The Shadow Secretary of State BIS, Chuka Umunna MP, has visited Standel Dawman Ltd with Amanda Melton, Principal of Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form to see Apprentices in action!
Chuka Umunna MP, Labour Shadow Secretary of State BIS, recently visited Standel Dawman in Nelson, Lancashire. Standel Dawman currently employs five Apprentices from Nelson and Colne College, and has a long history of recruiting Apprentices into full time roles. Chuka Umunna enjoyed a meet and greet and tour of the facilities, and then a roundtable discussion in the boardroom with College Principal, Amanda Melton and Standel Dawman senior staff members Philip Kyle, Managing Director, Jonathan Kirkbride, CNC Production Manager, Michelle Morley, Accounts Manager, and Gary Doores, Technical Director, plus a number of Apprentices. The Principal, Amanda Melton represents the Lancashire Colleges on the Lancashire LEP Skills Board, which was established to achieve a closer match between employers’ skills needs and education and skills provision.
Nelson and Colne College prides itself on the high quality education and training that it provides. The College is placed 3rd in the country for 16-18 year old Apprenticeship success, a statistic earned through its determination to ensure excellence in work based skills development. High-quality Apprenticeships, which offer genuine job opportunities, are a fantastic prospect for both young people and businesses. The College has driven a rigorous engagement strategy with the business community; it works with employers to ensure that Apprenticeships deliver a robust and sustainable solution to their work force skills needs.
After the meeting and roundtable discussion, Chuka Umunna said, “It was great to meet apprentices from across Pendle who are studying at Nelson and Colne College in manufacturing, business management and the service industries. I look forward to coming back to Pendle and visiting other companies in the next few months!”
