Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form has celebrated unique and outstanding A Level success at a special ‘Stars’ Awards Ceremony on Thursday 29th August.
Over thirty A Level students were invited to the 2014 Stars A Level Student Awards Ceremony, an evening of glitter and glam designed to celebrate the students’ outstanding achievements. On arrival, award winners and their guests were treated to a Buck Fizz reception and canapés.
The most coveted award of the night, the Fort Prize (awarded to the highest achieving A Level student, presented by special guest John Fort) went to the star of the show, Umair Asif. Umair graciously accepted the award and the significant bursary that came with it. Umair has achieved outstanding results during his time at Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form, having chosen the College due to its great reputation in STEM subjects. He achieved three A* grades in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics, an A grade in Chemistry, and a Distinction in an Advanced Extension Award in Maths! He’s now going to the University of York to read Maths and Physics.
Other awards given out during the night included the Barbara Ann English Literature Award (awarded to the highest achieving English Literature student), which was awarded to Maham Adil, the Student of the Year in English Literature, who achieved A grades in English Literature and Psychology and a B grade in French. She’s now going to the University of Manchester to read English Literature.
MP for Pendle, Andrew Stephenson, and Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Graham Roach, congratulated students and staff alike during the course of the evening. The students were praised for their commitment and drive to succeed, and the College teaching staff were also acknowledged for the significant impact they have on these young people’s life by encouraging and motivating them to work hard and achieve well over the past two years.
College Principal Amanda Melton said, “The Stars Awards are always a time of both celebration and sadness for us. It’s an opportunity to honour significant student achievement, but it’s also the last time we will see these wonderful young people before they go off to university.
“I want to congratulate students for working hard and achieving so well, parents for encouraging their sons and daughters to always strive for success, and of course our brilliant teaching staff for doing what they do best!
“I’d like to thank our special guests, John Fort, MP for Pendle Andrew Stephenson and Mayor of Pendle Councillor Graham Roach, for giving up their time to join in this time of celebration for us and our wonderful students!
“Many congratulations to all our winners – I am sure you have very bright futures ahead! Extra congratulations must go to our special award winners: Maham Adil, who won the Barbara Ann English Literature Award and, of course, our star Umair Asif for winning the coveted Fort Prize!”
Each year, the College builds on the successes of its previous years to reach new and impressive heights. This year has been no exception, with the College’s fantastic and motivated A Level students making themselves and their College proud and achieving an outstanding 100% pass rate!
Latest Government data, from research conducted by the Department for Education, confirmed that Nelson and Colne College is the 1st college in the country for A Level Value Added scores, and 4th college in the country for A Level grades. This means that students who come to the College are the most likely in the entire country to greatly surpass expectations based on their GCSE results, and are some of the most likely in the country to achieve high grades at A*-C! This data comes from 317 colleges, sixth forms and sixth form centres. Not only this, but the College has repeatedly proven that it is the BEST in the area for A Level grades!
