Holly Matthewman, an A Level Student at the College, is set to fly to India with charity Basti Ram to teach children this summer.
Student Holly Matthewman is proving that young people really do care – by signing up to take part in a voluntary scheme for teaching children – in India! Volunteering with charity Basti Ram, which works within isolated, rural and underprivileged communities in the city of Udaipur, Holly will primarily be working with tribal children, street children, destitute children, disabled children, and of course the community as a whole. She is completing this task in order to fulfil the volunteering section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, which she is completing as a student at the College. Basti Ram relies heavily on self-funded volunteers, and it is for this reason Holly has already begun a fierce strategy of fundraising. She needs to raise money for the costs of the trip, as well as to provide resources for the children she will be working with whilst she is there.
The College is proud to support Holly’s fundraising. She has already held a cake sale on the campus on Tuesday 25th March, and she has a variety of upcoming events planned, including a sweet stall on Tuesday 29th April. Outside of the College, Holly has previously been bag packing at Sainsbury’s and has sent out letters to a number of local companies, asking for their support. She also plans to participate in charity runs, such as the Manchester Colour Run!
Holly hopes to raise at least £1000, and so far she has raised over £700.
Holly is an exceptional student, achieving all A and A* grades at GCSE at Skipton Girls High School before she came to Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form. She is currently studying a challenging programme of A Levels including English Language, History, Psychology and Religious Studies, and is taking part in a variety of the extra-curricular enrichment activities that the College offers, including the Pendle Ski Programme, NCC Combat and of course, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Holly said, “I’ve always wanted to share what I have with those who are less fortunate. I think the challenge of living in a different culture and travelling on my own will be really good for me too. I really want to be a part of a wonderful charity making a difference, doing the best I can to help the children!”
