On Thursday 29th August, the College held a glittering Stars Awards Ceremony to honour the success of its A Level, Vocational and Occupational student stars.
2013 has proven to be another year of outstanding success at the College, where students have continued the College’s tradition of excellence to achieve some of the best results in the country.
This year’s A Level students were justly proud of a 100% pass rate and they have achieved some excellent statistics, including 85% of A Level students achieving high grades A*-C and 61% achieving top grades A*-B! In addition, 136 students achieved the coveted A*/A grades and a staggering 69 students achieved 2 or more A*/A grades!
In addition, our Vocational students have continued to make us proud, with a 99% pass rate and a high number achieving triple Distinction*, which is equivalent to 3 grade As at A Level. These outstanding results mean that a high percentage of our students not only progressed to university, but to their first choice university!
This year our students will be able to progress to some of the UK’s top universities, including the University of Cambridge, the University of Manchester, Newcastle University, The University of St. Andrews and the University of York to name a few. Amongst tough competition, students will join the elite of British education, taking up places to read Medicine, Mathematics, Fashion, Physics with Astrophysics, Architecture, English Literature and Dentistry. Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form class of 2013 will be leading the way in innovative industries to become the next generation of world leaders in their field.
This year, the Stars Ceremony was held in the College’s own restaurant and bistro, Farringtons. On arrival, the winners and their families enjoyed a Bucks Fizz reception with sumptuous canapés and were able to mingle with their former tutors and classmates.
College Principal Amanda Melton welcomed guest to the event before going through the awards which are presented to the College’s highest performing A Level, Vocational and Occupational students.
Special guest for the evening was Robert Fort, who is the treasurer of a trust bequeathed to the College, which is to be distributed each year to the College’s highest performing student. The award is called the Fort Prize and this year it was given to Billie Howorth, a former pupil of Pendle Vale College, who achieved 3 A*s and 1 A and has earned herself a place at the University of Cambridge, reading Natural Sciences.
Also in attendance was the Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Smith Benson, and the Mayoress, his daughter, Margaret Ingham.
College Principal, Amanda Melton said, “We are very sad to see these wonderful young people leaving us, though I am confident in their ability to go on and shine.”
“I want to congratulate parents and guardians who have played a major role in their success. As a parent myself I appreciate how difficult it can be supporting teenagers through such a period of change, balancing approaching adulthood with the need to commit to study, but you have guided them brilliantly. I must also thank the wonderful team of staff at the College who have led these young people to such high achievement. We have built an exceptional teaching team, second to none, and I know that if these young people had studied anywhere else, they could not have achieved better.”
