A student on Nelson and Colne College’s PGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education) course has been recognised for her commitment to learning at the National Adult Learner Week Awards 2013.
Cath Mitton has recently completed the PGCE course at the College, meaning that she is now fully qualified to teach in the Post 16 sector. Cath was the first person on the course to complete all of her assignments, despite coping with a long-term illness. She produced exceptional work, gaining a grade A overall and was judged as ‘Outstanding’ in her teaching observations – the highest grades possible.
The PGCE course at Nelson and Colne College is a well-respected route into the teaching profession and her tutor Charlotte, was so impressed with the high standard of work that Cath produced, together with her obvious dedication to the programme, that she put her forward to receive an award at the National Adult Learner Week Awards. Although she narrowly missed out on the finals, she was invited to attend a special awards ceremony in Manchester and was honoured with a certificate of achievement in recognition of commitment to learning.
Curriculum Leader for Teacher Education, Charlotte Bishop said, ” I can’t think of anyone who is more deserving of recognition for hard-work and determination than Cath. She has never let her illness hold her back and produced some exceptional work. I have absolutely no doubt that she will make a first-class teacher!”
Cath returned to College to thank her tutor and said, “I was greatly supported by Charlotte, who ensured I was on target and didn’t fall behind with the work. She maintained a contact when I couldn’t attend through illness and it was great to feel so supported. I think this certificate is a great achievement for the whole Teacher Education department at the College and I look forward to gaining some teaching hours in September.”
