Two Catering students at Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form have impressed judges at the Annual Tempest Arms Chutney Festival, winning the Budding Chefs category!

Nelson and Colne College’s School of Culinary Arts is highly respected and well known locally for producing the region’s next generation of highly-qualified catering and hospitality staff. The School’s restaurant Farringtons, is renowned for providing outstanding cuisine, based on local sourced and seasonal products. Former students have gone on to glittering careers, opening their own restaurants and working in Michelin starred kitchens across the UK.

The Tempest Arms Chutney Festival is in its fifth year and experienced Chefs both young and old were keen to take part. Nelson and Colne College was pleased to be able to put forward chutneys created by ten teams of its students and tutors were thrilled when duo, Jade Lee and Louis Jay Pope were named winners of the Budding Chefs category with their Spiced Beetroot and Orange Chutney.

The competition was judged by TV personality Clarissa Dickson Wright (one half of the popular duo, Two Fat Ladies) and highly respected food and drink writer Elaine Lemm. The criteria for the competition was stringent, with judges assessing the chutneys for consistency, texture, colour and appearance, flavour and aroma, and imagination and innovation – and the College students rose to the challenge to produce a fantastic array of chutney!

The students’ winning chutney is now available to purchase from the College’s restaurant Farringtons.
