Child Care and Education students at Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form have been learning about the importance of telling stories after a visit from a professional storyteller!
The Child Care department at Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form has an outstanding reputation for helping students to enter the child care professions. From Nursery workers, to teachers, society relies upon a well-trained generation of child care professionals to oversee the care and education of children.
As part of their course, Child Care students study a unit about books, stories, poems and rhymes, and their importance in children’s development. They then go on to create their own children’s book to complete the unit – which proves very popular with the students!
Visiting the student was Vickie Orton, a professional storyteller. Vickie came to give them tips on how to make storytelling fun and interactive for young children.
Sue Hartley, Child Care tutor at the College, said “All of the students look forward to and enjoy this particular unit on the Child Care course. The Government are eager for child carers to get young children interested in language and learning to read as early as possible and therefore it is important that the child care students learn how to do this effectively; as they are the educators of the future. Vickie gave sessions to all the child care students at the College and they all enjoyed it!
