Students at Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form have been building their financial knowledge, skills and confidence during Barclays Money Skills Week.
Barclays and the National Skills Academy for Financial Services have developed a week-long series of money related activities to provide students with an awareness of money management issues and give them the tools they need to stay in control of their budget. At the College, students were able to take part in informative money management activities during their regular tutorials. This the second year that the College has participated in the programme, and forms an essential part of the College’s extensive support system for its students.
In addition, students were encouraged to participate in a College wide photography competition “What does money mean to you?” and also completed a quiz to allow the College to determine the areas of finance that its students needed the most help with. From this it was able to develop more targeted advice sessions which answered the questions which were most important to young people.
The photography competition was aimed at getting the students to think creatively about what money meant to them and attracted a range of exciting images, from a money tree, to a collage of images from across Pendle that the photographer reacted to wealth and poverty.
The winning image was taken by Level 3 Chilren’s Care, Learning and Development student Peggy Monk. Her image was chosen by the judges who said its simplicity and straightforward message was a good interpretation of the competition.
Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form is proud of the academic achievements of its students, but it is also committed to making sure that they leave as well-rounded individuals who are equipped with the skills needed to become successful adults. Barclays Money Week is just part of the wide programme of events planned by the College to raise awareness about finances, health, safety and general well-being.
