Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form was pleased to welcome local high schools and colleges to the campus on Friday the 9th March as part National Science and Engineering Week. Acting as hosts for The Rotary Club’s Annual Technology Tournament; the College was pleased to assist with this competition which encourages the next generation of students into the challenging professions of engineering and manufacturing!
There were 29 teams all together from 12 schools and colleges, with approximately 116 students taking part in the challenge. Teams were placed into Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced categories, with different levels of design and engineering required in each. During the tournament, teams were assessed on their planning and team organisation, analysis, development of a solution, building their design, an overall project portfolio and final testing of their design. This year’s task was to design and build a coin sorting device.
After a day of innovative design and creation, the winners of the Foundation task were Pendle Vale Community College, with another Pendle Vale team and a team from Colne Primet High School as runners up. The Intermediate prize was won by Haslingden High School, with Park High School as runners up and the Advanced winners were Haslingden High School with Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form as runners up.
Joan Peagam, Head of Division for Science, Maths and Engineering at Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form said, “As always, we were honoured to host this fantastic event which does so much to encourage young people to consider these highly rewarding subjects. The College is dedicated to ensuring that all students who want to enter challenging professions such as Engineering are given every opportunity to succeed. It is our aim to ensure that the College remains the market leader in terms of producing the next generation of talented engineers; we have strong links with local companies and each year we see many students progress onto prestigious Engineering degree programmes. I am extremely proud of the College students who took part and in fact, I am confident that one of the designs, which was vastly unique in terms of concept and design would have been a winner if they’d had a little longer to perfect their construction! ”
