Students participating in the College’s innovative Pre-Professional Programme for Journalism have enjoyed a tour of local radio station 2BR as part of their studies!
Pre-Professional Programmes are innovative and pioneering courses which students dedicated to a career in a particular industry take in addition to their full-time studies. Our first Pre-Professional Programme for Medicine (Pre-Med) enjoyed phenomenal success, with participants winning places at some of the best medical or veterinary schools in the country. Therefore, the College decided to broaden its programmes to encompass similar courses for students interested in Law, Teaching or Journalism.
New for this year, the Pre-Professional Programme has got off to a great start with budding journalists heading to local radio station 2BR for a studio tour and an insight into broadcast journalism.
The students met with the station’s Head of News, Peter Mabb, who talked them through the process of gathering news, validating the source and how to effectively research a story and what other stations are reporting on! During the studio tour, the students were able to visit the recording studios and sat in on a live broadcast, and were shown how some of the control panels functioned.

It’s a real pleasure to be able to welcome journalism students studying on our doorstep. They were able to tour our studio complex and loved sitting in the main studio with the headphones on. Many took pictures to put on their Facebook profiles. It’s a very competitive industry but we have a strong commitment to help and nurture home grown talent. I have no doubt many of the students will go on to have successful careers in the industry.”
