Tears of joy, bursts of laughter and shining smiles filled the refectory area of Nelson and Colne College as students opened their envelopes to outstanding A Level results.
NCC once again achieved brilliant results, with a 99% pass rate and a number of students progressing on to various Russell Group universities – the best in the country – including Oxford. In addition, 76.5% of students obtained at least one grade A*-B and 92% achieved at least one grade A*-C.
Students were invited in from 7.30am to collect their results and after a long, nerve-wracking wait they were joined by family and friends at a special leavers’ breakfast.
One of those facing a nervous wait was Ali Amad, 18, formerly of Marsden Heights Community College. He achieved A*AA in Maths, Business and Sociology and he is progressing on to the University of Leeds to study Maths.
Ali, from Nelson, said: “I’m proud, happy and ecstatic! I needed ABB for my firm choice so to exceed that is such a great feeling.
“I chose to study at Nelson and Colne College because the way the courses are taught suited me, and I thought the staff on open days were brilliant.
“I’ve found my teachers to always be there for me when I have needed academic or pastoral support, and they ensure they get the best out of you to reach your maximum potential.”
Another student delighted at receiving her results was Happiness Mpofu, 19, from Blackburn, who achieved AAB in Business, Philosophy, Ethics and Religion and Government and Politics.
The former St Wilfrid’s CE Academy student, who is progressing on to the University of Birmingham to study Policy, Politics and Economics said: “I’m shocked and thrilled – I’ve really surprised myself with my results!
“The support from teachers has been amazing and the revision workshops held throughout the year to help students were very useful. The teachers are also really friendly and have made College enjoyable.”
And Adam Livesey became the third sibling of his family to succeed at Nelson and Colne College by achieving AAB in History, Sociology and Government and Politics.
Adam, 18, previously of Pendle Vale College, is heading to the University of Sheffield to study Politics. He said: “I’m feeling great I’ve got the results I needed to get my place at university and it is a weight off my shoulders!
“Both of my sisters came to NCC and they said it was a good college and it has been. My teachers have offered workshops which have been a great help and lots of support for exams.
“I’d definitely recommend Nelson and Colne College – the teaching is good and it has great resources and facilities.”
In its 2017/18 results, NCC achieved a 99% pass rate at A Level and a 100% pass rate in advanced vocational courses.
The college is top in the country for 16-18 learner achievement at all levels, number one in the country for A Levels, based on progress scores, and the number one college in the country for overall Apprenticeship achievement at all ages and levels.
Government data also places NCC as the best college in the area for vocational courses, based on progress scores, while it is also the best college in Lancashire for student satisfaction, according to the FE Choices Learner Satisfaction Survey.
Students wanting to enrol at NCC for a September start can do so between 9am and 4pm on Thursday 23 August – GCSE Results Day. Students must bring proof of ID and their GCSE results with them to enrolment.
