A student from Nelson and Colne College is enjoying an African adventure before she heads off to University.
Sally Ralphson, 18, achieved A*AA in Sociology, Biology and Religious Studies at A Level and will head off to the University of Nottingham to study Psychology.
But before she does, she will finish off a 10-week International Citizen Service human rights project in Ghana. She will be working in a team of UK and Ghanaian volunteers in six different rural communities.
Sally, who previously went to Westholme School, said: “My results are brilliant and I’m happy to be going off to prepare myself for a career in the field of Psychology.
“I’ve made some really lovely friends and have enjoyed the subjects I have been studying at NCC. All the teaching in my lessons is really good and the teachers seem to genuinely want to help you do as well as possible.
“I have found the extra support for dyslexia amazing and extremely helpful in allowing me to succeed in my studies at College.”
The work Sally is involved with in Ghana is focusing on three main areas, those being early child marriage, sexual and reproductive health and youth confidence.
The group is also engaging with communities through radio shows, as well as meeting with organisations including the Ghana Education Service (GES) to talk about schemes they can implement in schools to make children more confident and give them places they can go to if they need help.
Sally said: “This is going to help me in the future as I am developing new skills such as knowing how to prepare for a meeting with important people and it has also has given me an insight into a completely different culture.
“The beliefs of the people in Ghana are so different from the beliefs we have and learning how to adapt to their way of life, for example, will definitely be beneficial in the future.
“I am really enjoying it and it is really satisfying knowing the work you are doing is actually going to impact on people’s lives for a long time in the future.
“After we leave in September another group will come to pick up on where we left off so the changes we are making should be lasting which is a great feeling.”
